What to Wear (for Him) | DFW Photographer

(Part 1 of 2) Oval, Triangle, Rectangle, & Inverted Triangle

Finding his perfect outfit

On to the men! Before writing this blog, we hadn’t really thought about the different shapes of men. Typically, everyone is more concerned about the shape of women and flattering a woman’s body; however, there are guides out there to help the men out as well. So, similar to what we told the women, you are handsome just the way. You don’t need to change to add value to your life; however, we do want to help you feel more confident in what your clothing so we’ve put together a few tips to get you started. We are not experts on this, but just put together a little research so you can feel amazing everyday, but specifically for your photo shoot.

Oval Shape

The oval shaped man typically displays rounded shoulders, large arms and midsection. Your goal will be to de-emphasize your stomach area and aim for your shoulders to appear smaller and your torso longer.

To flatter and smooth your lower half, select wide leg, mid-rise jeans that are a darker color denim. Avoid any button up jeans and stick to the zipper. For your tops, find shirts that are just the right size, meaning they’re not snug nor baggy, but just slide over your body. V-necks will elongate your torso. When selecting a button-up shirt, try to match the color of your pants. If you wear dark colored pants and a white shirt, you will draw attention to your stomach area. Darker colors will flatter your body as well as vertical lines. Trousers that have pleats will help you out and suit jackets that fall below your mid-section will give you a taller and thinner appearance. Your objective is to draw attention away from your midsection and elongate your torso. Check out our Pinterest board for more ideas.

Triangle Shape

The triangle shaped man has an athletic build with a well-toned chest, but with wider hips and the weight tends to sit in the lower body. Your goal is to make your hips and bottom appear smaller.

You want to rock jeans that have a little flair and aren’t tight fitting. The flair will balance out your body (straight-leg jeans are great). Avoid skinny jeans as that will make your hips look bigger than they are. Wear jeans with darker colored denim and keep any washed out area at or below the knee. Your tops need to be lighter in color and add bulk to your torso. Avoid tight-fitted and super loose clothing. Layering will serve you better as it adds bulk. You’ll want to wear a medium-spread collar. Check out our Pinterest board for more ideas.

Rectangle Shape

The rectangle shaped man is tall with wider shoulders. Your shoulders, waist, and hips are typically about the same width. Your goal is to make your shoulders seem broader.

Straight-leg or skinny jeans look great. Darker colored slim your legs. For your shirts, go for a wide-collar, turtle neg or high neck shirts, and printed shirts. Just note that vertical lines will make you look thinner. Longer jackets give your shoulders a wider appearance and leaving it open will balance out your bottom half.

Inverted Triangle Shape

The last shape we’ll discuss is the inverted triangle shape. These men’s shoulders are broader than the rest of his body and have well shaped arms, legs, and chest. Your goal is to balance your lower body with your upper body.

Your tops should be well-fitted, but not tight or clingy. Wear tank tops for casual wear to show off your shoulders. V-neck and oval neck shirts add balance. Any pattern should be below the chest. Light colored straight-leg or bootcut jeans are the way to go. Avoid skinny jeans or pants that fit too tight as that will make your bottom half appear too small compared to your torso. Chinos, cargo pants, or trousers with pleats will widen your hips. Lastly, wear softer fabric jackets and leave them open. Darker colored jackets paired with lighter colored pants will give you a handsome look.

We hope these tips will give you a good start to finding the perfect outfit for your photo shoot.
